Antwerp becomes the new "congested port" in Europe
Release time:2021-07-14 11:51:11| Browse times:

At present, Antwerp has become the latest Nordic container port to be affected by the chain reaction of terminal congestion. The waiting time for ships in this Belgian hub port has been extended to 5 days. The delay in the shipping schedule prompted the 2M alliance partners Maersk and MSC to temporarily cancel the Antwerp call for six weeks on the AE55/Griffin line starting with the launch of the "MSC Diletta" from China this week.

2M stated last week that the route's service will be postponed from week 29 to week 30, "in order to cope with the current challenging market situation, congestion and shipping delays." Maersk stated that due to the high storage yard density and the particularly long waiting time for ships, the company has decided to skip the AE55 route in Antwerp. MSC stated that the congestion in Antwerp affected the reliability of the shipping schedule and caused shipment delays.

2M said that cargo scheduled for Antwerp will be merged into the AE6/Lion. However, due to the continued high demand for alternative ports of call and insufficient allocation, carriers may be forced to unload some Antwerp containers in Rotterdam, which will increase the port’s current high yard density and may delay the delivery of containers.

Maersk reported that in Rotterdam, berthing was delayed by 1-2 days, while berthing in Antwerp was delayed by 3-5 days. Maersk is optimistic about the prospects of the container terminal. Maersk stated: "Although the situation is still unstable, we expect that the status of Nordic ports will improve in the next 30 days."
