On August 30, Hapag-Lloyd issued an announcement stating that to further ease the scarcity of empty containers, they have ordered another 75,000 TEU dry boxes. The containers will be manufactured in China and delivered within the fourth quarter of 2021.

Regarding the large-scale container building again, Hapag-Lloyd said that due to the current slow turnover of containers, the demand for containers is still growing substantially.
"Our normal container turnaround time is 50 days, but due to the current serious congestion in the global port terminal and inland business supply chain, the current container turnaround time is 60 days or more." Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen said .
He further explained: "This means that the number of containers required to transport the same amount of goods has increased by about 20%. Ordering new containers can further alleviate the current shortage of containers in the market."
According to Clarkson's latest forecast, the growth rate of global container trade in 2021 is about 6.3%. It is expected that the container shipping market will enter the seasonal peak season in the second half of the year, and demand will continue to maintain a strong growth momentum. Under the epidemic, the problems of global port congestion and supply chain imbalance cannot be solved fundamentally in the short term. As well as factors such as the continued high prosperity of the container shipping industry, which makes customers have sufficient willingness to purchase containers, it is expected that the demand for containers in the second half of this year will remain high.
From this point of view, the lack of containers in the shipping market will continue for some time, and Hapag-Lloyd's journey of container building may continue.
